MATT LIBBY

Matt Libby was born and raised in Saco, Maine and is a 1996 graduate of Thornton Academy. He was a strong student at Thornton, graduating in the top ten percent of his class. He played football, baseball, and hockey. Matt decided to pursue a dream of playing Division I college hockey when he decided to forgo his senior year football and hockey seasons to play for a local junior hockey team. He played one season for the Great Northern Snowdevils of Biddeford and was named the East Coast Hockey League’s Best Defenseman. After the season Matt was offered a full athletic scholarship to Providence College, which was contingent on his playing one more year of junior hockey. So Matt moved out to Des Moines, Iowa to play for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. There he fined tuned his hockey skills in preparation for the college game and also completed three college courses at the local community college.

Matt’s career at Providence College was successful both on and off the ice. As a captain his senior year, he helped lead the Friars to their best finish in the Hockey East Conference in school history and an NCAA tournament birth. During this break-out season in which he scored 30 points (2nd among defenseman in Hockey East), Matt received the following honors: New England Sport Writer’s Association Most Improved Player, 2nd Team All-Hockey East, Providence College Mal Brown Award (athlete demonstrating sportsmanship, courage, and honor) and Academic All-American. Matt excelled in the classroom as well, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Providence College in 2001 with a B.S. in Business Management. He participated in the college’s Student Athlete Youth Leadership Council, as well as the Student Athlete Mentoring Program. Matt was also a big brother in the Big Brother Big Sister Program during his last two years at Providence College. He has continued to be a mentor for children as a big brother in the Big Brother Big Sister program of Southern Maine.

Matt achieved a lifelong goal of playing professional hockey after leaving Providence College. He spent four years in the profession until a series of injuries encouraged him to retire after the 2004-2005 season. However, Matt’s professional career, while brief, was very successful. During his first season playing for the Trenton Titans of the East Coast Hockey League, he was named to the league’s All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team. He spent the next two seasons in Portland, ME playing for the Pirates of the American Hockey League. Matt made the team out of training camp and became the first Maine native to sign a contract with the Pirates. He returned to Trenton, NJ during his last pro season and helped the team win the league championship.

After retiring in 2005, Matt earned his M.B.A. from the University of Southern Maine while working as a graduate assistant for the Maine Small Business Development Center. He is currently working at the law firm of Libby O’Brien Kingsley and Champion in Kennebunk and plans to attend Maine Law School in the fall of 2009. He has not left the game of hockey entirely, however. Matt has been an assistant coach for the Portland High School Hockey Team for two seasons, and this past season he was the head coach of the Top Dog Spartans, a Triple A Under-18 Team out of Maine and New Hampshire. He helped lead the Spartans to the 2009 USA Hockey National Tournament.
